Personal Service in a Traditional Setting - Ulverston’s Market Hall

If your shopping list included a loaf of bread, some unusual chutney, an antique brooch, a pair of socks, batteries, bird seed, a laundry bag, a child’s book, wrapping paper and sellotape, a new top, traditional sweets, a phone cover, a connector for your TV cable, a needle and thread, a Roman coin and a pound of onions, where could you go to find them all under one roof and have a haircut and a cup of tea into the bargain? In Ulverston’s small but perfectly formed Market Hall, which has been sheltering traders and their customers from the elements for the best part of 80 years. While visitors to Ulverston often comment on how much they like the hall, and every stall has its regulars, the market is sometimes overlooked by those who haven’t been in for a while and who don’t realise the range of services now available. You can still have watch batteries fitted and buy hoover bags, and although the ‘Music Man’ and Curtain Lady’ have gone, you can now find computer and phone accessories and have a broken zip replaced. As Christmas approaches, it’s a great place for popping in and picking up those items you suddenly find you need, like a cake board or a fuse for your fairy lights. Under the auspices of Ulverston Community Enterprises the hall has gained free wi-fi and refurbished public loos, and looks forward to more improvements in the future. If you are starting out as a retailer, the Market Hall is a great place to dip your toe in the water, so speak to UCE representatives in the Coronation Hall.
