Soon South Lakeland District Council’s Cabinet will have discussed a report recommending another stage of development work on the plans for a new Sports Centre in Ulverston. This stage will include further public consultation on revised proposals, as well as finalising the designs and costs.

Originally, GSK intended to move its sports centre when the new plant was built on its North Lonsdale Road site, and to work with SLDC on an ambitious new joint sports facility on Priory Road. Although GSK’s decision not to build this new plant affected this scheme, discussions between the firm and SLDC have continued, and now GSK has confirmed it will contribute £2 million to the Ulverston sports centre plans to support improvements in health and wellbeing for the community. The project has been downsized somewhat since the projected overall budget has reduced from £12.9 million to £9.2 million.

However, the revised proposals still include a brand new sports centre housing a six-lane, 25 metre swimming pool, a sports hall with four indoor courts, a gym, sauna, two multi-use studios and a meeting room, while outside facilities would include a full size hockey pitch, two outdoor tennis courts, bowling green, four grass pitches and a seven-a-side 3G pitch.

Studies have already established that these new facilities could be successfully developed at Priory Road and would contribute to SLDC’s Council Plan priorities to improve residents’ health and wellbeing, support the local economy and improve the environment
